NLM’s Bookshelf:

Citing Medicine: The NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers.

Citing Medicine provides assistance to authors in compiling lists of references for their publications, to editors in revising such lists, to publishers in setting reference standards for their authors and editors, and to librarians and others in formatting bibliographic citations.

Modern Genetic Analysis.

Modern Genetic Analysis was written for instructors and students who need a textbook that supports the “DNA first” approach. This departure from the traditional historical unfolding of genetics has had some significant side effects—chief among them, a more streamlined presentation in which genetic principles stand in bolder relief.

Molecular Biology of the Cell.

Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. By extracting fundamental concepts and meaning from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and create a coherent framework through which non-expert readers may approach the subject. Written in clear and concise language, and illustrated with original drawings, the book is enjoyable to read, and provides a sense of the excitement of modern biology. Molecular Biology of the Cell not only sets forth the current understanding of cell biology (updated as of Fall 2001), but also explores the intriguing implications and possibilities of that which remains unknown.

Metagenomics: Sequences from the Environment.

This publication contains a collection of chapters developed by NCBI from metagenome projects submitted to the Genomes Projects database. These chapters provide links to the sequence data and genome project submission as well as to BLAST, taxonomic lineages and publications.

Patient Drug Information from MedMaster.

This resource contains useful information on more than 1000 drugs, from "Abacavir" to "Zonisamide". You can find out why a particular medication is prescribed, how the medication should be taken, and be advised what to do if you have missed a dose. Side effects, both common and rare, are also listed.

WebVision: The Organization of the Retina and Visual System.

The purpose of this Electronic Tutorial is to summarize these recent advances and to describe our present understanding, based primarily on anatomic investigations, of the Neural Organization of the Mammalian Retina. As time goes on we have been inviting other authors to write chapters on their speciality concerning the retina or other visual pathways. A great addition has been a section on Psychophysics of Vision which we hope will be of general information to all interested in learning the basics of visual perception.
