ACP Journal ClubEvidence Based Medicine
for Better Patient Care selects from the biomedical literature those articles
reporting original studies and systematic reviews that warrant immediate attention
by physicians attempting to keep pace with important advances in internal medicine.
These articles are summarized in "value added" abstracts and commented
on by clinical experts.
bmjupdates+ provides an educational service for practicing clinicians, designed to alert clinicians to important new research. It provides access to the best new research of relevance for clinical practice in the fields of general practice, primary care and internal medicine.110 core clinical journals are pre-rated for quality using explicit criteria. In addition, a minimum of 3 practicing physicians provide their assessments of the relevance and newsworthiness of the reports through an online review process using the McMaster Online Rating of Evidence (MORE). Physicians can register their areas of interest and receive email alerts tailored to their clinical interests. The cumulative database of pre-rated articles, dating back to 2002, is searchable. Initial registration for this free service is required.
Cochrane Library is a unique source of reliable and up-to-date
information on the effects of interventions in health care. The Cochrane Library
consists of a regularly updated collection of evidence-based medicine databases.
Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine (scroll down to find the link) contains evidence-based information on herbs and natural remedies and the conditions they may be used to treat, as well as known or suspected drug interactions. The guide addresses the amount and type of evidence to support use of these herbs and supplements, as well as how patients may be using them regardless of current evidence.
Evidence Based Medicine: for Primary
Care and Internal Medicine is an evidence based journal which selects original
and review articles in the fields of primary care. Expert commentaries and clinical
impact ratings are then added. A wide range of articles are surveyed, applying
strict criteria for the quality and validity of the research. Practicing clinicians
assess the clinical relevance of the best studies.

MEDLINE (OhioLINK) is OhioLINK's version of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic
database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine,
the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. This database contains
bibliographic citations (e.g., authors, title, and journal reference) and author
abstracts from 4,500 biomedical journals published in the United States and
70 foreign countries. PubMed and MEDLINE (OhioLINK) have essentially the same
content except that PubMed provides access to citations that are "in process"
and don't appear in MEDLINE (OhioLINK) until they have been fully indexed.
National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC)
is a database of evidence based clinical practice guidelines and related documents,
an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ). The
mission of the NGC is to provide objective information on clinical practice
guidelines, linking to the full text guideline whenever possible.
PubMed
(1950 - present) PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's version of
MEDLINE. Using this link to PubMed provides access to online journal
articles to which Health Sciences Library subscribes. Look for the "University of Cincinnati
Medical Center Libraries" button. For more information, please

or Jane Thompson at 558-8310 or jane.thompson@uc.edu.
My NCBI has replaced the Cubby and includes automatic e-mailing
of search updates and filters for search results. Information
about how to set up My NCBI.
PubMed
Clinical Queries provides a special evidence based filter to help retrieve
evidence based research in PubMed.
SUMSearch simultaneously searches
multiple internet sites and presents the results by "breadth of discussion".
SUMSearch adapts its searching according to the number of hits received from
each site. SUMSearch will select the best internet sites to search and format
the query for each site. It returns a list of results in descending order of
complexity with systematic reviews and original research in the second half
of the results. The majority of links come from: The National Library of Medicine
(NLM), the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) and the National
Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC).
UpToDate is designed to provide concise,
practical answers to clinical questions at the point of care. UpToDate follows
a hierarchy of evidence consistent with most evidence-based resources. At the
top of the hierarchy are randomized trials of high methodological quality, followed
by randomized trials with methodological limitations, observational studies,
and unsystematic clinical observations. Inferences are stronger when the evidence
is summarized in systematic reviews of the literature that present all relevant
data. Please note: This link is for anyone in the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center.
University Hospital UpToDate users no longer have access from this link. Instead, University Hospital access is via the company’s TUH-licensed portal at UpToDate.healthall.com. As a convenience for TUH UpToDate users a link to this site has been pushed to TUH Internet Explorer links.
UpToDate is available for use on-site only at the University of Cincinnati Health Center and University Hospital.
